- Drink kava on an empty stomach: Don’t eat for about 2-3 hours before drinking kava. Kavalactones get more easily absorbed by the body on an empty stomach. Since Tui Kava is a heady kava drinking first thing in the morning works great. Don't eat for at least 3 hours after drinking kava to get the most out of your kava. Kavalactones also attach to fat cells which increase absorption so using Almond, Coconut or Whole milk enhances the effect.
- Prepare kava correctly: The main goal in kava preparation is to ensure that all the soft particles of the kava powder are loosened from the hard particles (makas) by kneading, blending or shaking. This will ensure that you break down the fibers and release the kavalactones. That’s why we suggest that you use a method that agitates the powder. Quality takes time. Using the traditional method is also part meditation and preparing mentally. Micronized kava will save time vs medium grind and is easy to prepare since you just add it to water and then drink it. But if you are in it, to maximize it, taking time to prepare kava will always pay off. Micronized kava takes less time to prepare but it's always good to make the fibers give up all their goodness. I still believe that agitating micronized kava improves its outcome. (See the blogs on making kava using different methods)
- The right sediment is good: If using a 75 micron mesh bag, the remaining sediment is usually goodness. The larger pieces have been filtered out. In the islands there are no microns, if you are lucky a clean t-shirt is used, so you get lots more sediment and impact. The sediment that settles to the bottom of the bowl during preparation contains up to 70% of the effects which you experience from kava. Make sure when you serve up a cup that you mix the bowl then scoop up a high tide bowl, ensuring that you get sediments in every serving. The recipient will be appreciative.
- Food prevents maximum impact: Do not eat anything for at least 2 hours after your last kava drink. The heavy/relaxation effect of kava usually stays even after eating but will be reduced. Tui Kava is a heady Kava and you want to experience it. Just like eating after alcohol, food dulls the effects, its just chemistry. Stick with the South Pacific tried and true ritual of drinking.
- Not using enough kava: Everyone is different and for that reason some people may require up to 2 tablespoons of kava (medium grind) or one heaping teaspoon of micronized, to feel its effects and some may require more. Just like alcohol, it affects everyone differently. The more you practice and more in tune you are with your body the easier it is to maximize the benefit of kava. Larger folks may require more root powder, experiment till you find your optimal amount. Remember it's all about math, you want to make sure you know where your kava comes from and the levels of kavalactones. Quality takes time and using a quality product.
- Don’t over heat: kavalactones break down with high heat, don’t use boiling water to make a brew (plus you will burn your hands). You can release more of the kavalactones by using warm water, but again make sure its in the 105 degree range and not over 135 degrees. If mixing by hand, it shouldn't be too hot to the touch. It's also why you don’t want over processed kava. During the grinding and milling process, the kava will be exposed to heat, if there is too much heat the kavalactones will break down. Kavalactones will break down at 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
- To increase the strength of your kava you can add a splash of coconut milk, whole milk, almond milk or any other fatty beverage. The fat cells will draw the kavalactones out of the fibers as they are attracted to fat.
- Remember, these are just some factors that could be affecting your experience with kava. It’s always best to consult with a healthcare professional if you have any concerns. Or make some South Pacific Island friends and share, they will help you understand how to drink kava correctly. If you provide the kava they will definitely be there to help you drink it. There are certain islands in Fiji that produce consistently high quality kava. Experience counts.
