
Making Kava using an AluBall

In other blogs we talked about making kava the traditional way by kneading & squeezing, we also covered using a blender. The 3rd way to make kava is to use the AluBall which you can get on Amazon.

Required: AluBall / Hot Water / Pounded Kava or Micronized
- Step 1: Fill the Alu Ball with kava root powder and close it securely
- You can use Micronized or Traditional.
- Fill the ball with about 3 heaping teaspoons or about 1-1/2 Tablespoons of kava, this will be about 10grams and will fill one half of the ball to the top of the screen. I have found this to be optimal for most kava's. If you are using lower grade kava you may need more. Close it securely. The Alu Ball can hold around 2 tablespoons of kava powder, which is enough for one serving.
- Caution - do not fill both halves of the AluBall this will reduce the effectiveness of the shaking. Only fill one half of the ball.
- Caution - the threads on the Ball are very fine, so take your time and don't strip the threads. If you strip the threads your screwed. Be patient.
- Make sure that you don't get kava powder in the threads. So knock off any kava that may be on the threads.
- Bigger threads could be an improvement for the ball.
- Step 2: Drop Ball in Shaker and Add warm water to a shaker bottle
- Drop the Aluball into the Shaker. I like to do this first so you pour the hot water over the ball, this will help wet the Kava.
- Next, Add Hot water to a shaker bottle. Warmer water is recommended to help release the oils which contain the kavalactones. I like between 110 and 130 degrees F. I usually shoot for 120 degrees. The amount of water depends on your preference, but a good rule of thumb is to use 8-12 oz. of water per Alu Ball.
- Note: Do not use boiling water, Do Not use water over 130 degrees. Kavalactones break down at 140 degrees, so you will only have a hot water drink with no effects.
- You can add hot water to a cup and then add cool water to get to the right temperature using a BBQ thermometer, unless your kettle allows you to set the temperature. If you have one then you are special. :)
- Soft shake and make sure all kava is wet, let ball sit in water for a couple of minutes
- Let the kava steep, this will help release the kavalactones.
- Step 3: Shake vigorously for about 2-3 minutes.
- Shake vigorously for 2-3 minutes or longer, longer is better. I will usually shake for about 3 minutes. This will allow the water to extract the kavalactones from the kava powder inside the Alu Ball. I like to shake longer to get all the goodness out.
- Since the screen is 75 microns anything that escapes into the elixir is goodness.
- After you have completed your shaking then add your almond, coconut or whole milk.
- Add about a Splash or Tablespoon of Coconut Milk, Whole Milk or any other fatty type milk. Remember that Kavalactones will attach to fat cells and make a more powerful elixir.
- I will usually do another 15 second shake to mix the milk and let the kavalactones bind to the fat in the milk.
- You can then add a bit of ice if you want to chill it.
- Opinion: I prefer to drink it warm since it seems to have more of a kick and gets absorbed faster than iced drinks.
- Step 4: Pour into your favorite Tumbler or drink from the Shaker.
- I prefer using a tumbler since I like to reduce my plastic intake but your preference.
- I also like to clean my AluBall and shaker immediately.
- Plus you can get a cool Tumbler from Tui Kava.
- But before you drink it down you need to complete step 5.

- Step 5: Clean your AluBall
- Make sure to clean your Aluball. It's best if you have a spray hose on your kitchen sink to get all the particles out of the fine mesh.
- It’s a very fine mesh and you don’t want to clog up the holes.

- TIP Review
- Lets Review the TIPs from this lesson.
- TIP 1 - Use hottish water between 110 - 120 degrees F. This will help release the kavalactones. Never, ever above 135 degrees.
- TIP 2 - The more you shake the more goodness you release. More is better.
- TIP 3 - After the initial shake, add your Milk and shake again. This will bind the kavalactones to the fat cells.
- TIP 4 - You should use a Whole milk, coconut milk or almond milk to increase the strength of you kava. Skim milk will not work.
- TIP 5 - If you want to chill your drink you can add some crushed ice to your final shake along with the milk.
- TIP 6 - Clean your balls right after making to keep the fine mesh clean, and don't strip your threads or you'll have to buy another one.
- Remember no one wants a drink made with dirty balls…….. :)
Closing Thoughts - The Aluball is Good for quickness and releases a lot of the kavalactones. Great in the morning if you have a daytime heady kava and in a rush. I tried this with Tui Kava 4 times this week and have really enjoyed the impact. Almost as good as the blender method. This kava is great quality, very relaxing but highly motivating at the same time. It's a very heady kava. The quality of your kava will impact your experience. The AluBall is also a great way to make a kava before sleep, it's fast and easy.
